Photo board boosts seasonal campaign for Christmas Tree grower

Seasonal Marketing Campaign

Photo Cutouts customer The Natural Christmas Tree Company have given us some nice feedback on Facebook about their Christmas 2018 campaign:

“Fantastic service and quick and efficient design and logo placement! The photo cutout has been a great success for us!”

-Harry Edwards

If you run a Christmas tree business, as Natural Christmas Tree Company owner Harry Edwards does, it’s probably fair to say that your business is seasonal! It involves work all year round, but the bulk of sales will happen during a short and very busy period each year. What can you do to maximise sales during this period? It would be pretty disappointing if you worked so hard and not enough people got to hear about your business.

Seasonal Marketing Campaign
Branding can be as subtle or as in-your-face as you choose.

To avoid seasonal sales flops, businesses can do a range of things to boost awareness and get people buying. One part of this mix is a photo cutout board: a colourful stand-up board that projects a friendly image of your brand. It comes with face holes so that customers can take funny photos of each other – with your company branding front and centre!

This helps create a buzz about your company by word of mouth and via social media. The board can be anywhere that helps to get the message out: at shopping centres, in front of your premises, at trade shows and other events, or just via social media by sharing photos of employees and others posing and making faces!

Other seasonal business include fireworks, food stalls, lawn care & gardening, outdoor adventure, travel, and many more. If you run a seasonal business, don’t let all your hard work fail to pay off at peak sales time by not shouting loudly enough about your business! A Photo Cutout board is a proven (and fun) part of the seasonal marketing mix.

Here are a couple of boards we made for seasonal fireworks supplier Standard Fireworks, to help make sure their peak season wasn’t a damp squib and really went off with a bang.

Theme of the Week: Animals!

Animals
Tiger and panda in a promotional board for Animalz face masks.

Looking back at the photo cutouts we’ve made, we’ve realised that they often feature animals. The reasons for this are as varied as our clients, but it seems that many charities, brands and products have chosen to feature animals in their photo cutouts. It’s the same in advertising. Think how many brands have an animal as their mascot. So this week we’re featuring our animal friends. Welcome to the Photo Cutouts zoo!

Horses

A four-legged friend will never let you down – and neither will we! Here are some equine boards from the last year or two.

Dogs

Man’s Best Friend has featured in quite a few of our boards. We like to do tricks for our customers!

Make everyone a magazine cover star!

Get people into your magazine – literally.

We’re happy to make photo cutout boards to whatever specifications our customers ask for – the imagination and variety are endless! But we’ve noticed that over time, patterns emerge that represent segments and sub-segments of the market for promotional cutout boards. This week’s theme is … the giant face-in-hole magazine cover. We’ve made quite a few of these for magazine launches, campaigns, corporate events and just good old marketing, and they seem to be a hit.

It can be as simple as getting a mock-up of the magazine’s front cover from the publisher, printing it and cutting out one or two face holes. Others can involve more design work from our in-house design team. Whichever way, the result is always big, bold, colourful and fun – and a great way to promote a magazine. We’ve got folding boards, hand-held boards to pass around, full-size boards, and boards without face holes for people to ‘stand in’ as the cover star – the range of choices grows all the time.

Here are some of the magazine cover boards we’ve made recently. Check out the fun and see if you’d like one for YOUR publication!

1. Group Leisure & Travel

Everybody wanted to be part of ‘the world’s best looking group’ at the Group Travel Show at the NEC. This is a full-size board with metal feet that people can stand in from behind – our stock-in-trade and a sure fire winner.

2. The Week Junior

Engaging curious young minds, The Week Junior magazine is a multi-award winning current affairs magazine for 8 to 14 year olds. They often use our photo cutout covers for new issues at promotional events.

3. First Wonder Box

Another children’s current affairs publication is First News – they used our boards to launch First Wonder Box, themed boxes bursting with learning and fun. Young people were happy to pose in front of the board if they didn’t quite reach the face hole – after all, we can only cut the hole at one height! This is an example of our folding board that folds in half to save space and make it more easily transportable.

4. Vaillant

Heating and cooling firm Vaillant used a Photo Cutouts board at the launch of their in-house magazine, Advance. This is a ‘selfie board’ – lightweight and portable, designed to be passed around for anybunny to use!

Prommotional marketing magazine cover star
Even Vaillant’s bunny mascot somehow got in on the act.

5. Love Sewing Magazine

This one was a real hit with women dying to pose on the front cover! Rather than have a face hole, we left the main image blank so that people could stand in front of it. And boy, did they!

David Walliams board brings fun to Welsh children

Our friends over at Magic Light Productions are running a David Walliams-themed tour of schools in Denbighshire, North-East Wales that is driving kids wild with excitement. Their T’riffic Takeover days are a brilliant idea: fill the school with actors dressed as characters from Walliams’ fictional world for a day. For example, here’s Mrs Trafe, the dinner lady from Billionaire Boy who cooks the most revolting food ever, like deep fried Blu-Tack, badger and onion pie and jacket potatoes with sock cheese.

Walliams Mrs Trafe

A Photo Cutouts board is the centrepiece for photo opportunities during the T’riffic Takeovers. We did a mashup of characters from David Walliams books and added hashtags and the Magic Light Productions insignia. Here’s some nice feedback about the board from Twitter.

Walliams book board

The board was also appreciated by Denbighshire County Council’s Schools Enrichment programme, who are involved in the Walliams takeovers.

Walliams school takeovers Wales

It was nice of Magic Light Productions and Denbighshire County Council to give a nod to Photo Cutouts for the board. We’re human and we like being appreciated! But the main thing is that the T’riffic Takeovers are a roaring success, so here are some more photos that speak for themselves.

Walliams T'riffic Takeovers
The board provided a focus for staff and pupils to get into character

Walliams book board
The board was also involved in a daily ‘I Wonder Where?’ teaser that gave a clue as to where the T’riffic Takeovers roadshow would be the next day

Photo Cutouts boards are seeing increasing use in theatrical productions like Magic Light Productions’ Walliams schools roadshow. They can also be used in marketing promotions, awards ceremonies, as a photo opportunity at events, wedding photography props, at seasonal festivities like Halloween, Christmas and Easter, for product launches, book signings, TV shows, and more.

Theme of the week: Healthcare

There’s a theme developing this week …

We serve all industries that need face in the hole boards and marketing props for their events. But some weeks, there seems to be a theme. This week it’s healthcare. Three of the boards we’ve sent out this week have been healthcare-related: two major cancer charities and NHS Wales! There’s probably no rhyme or reason to it (like the time we got three requests for boards featuring horses in the same month), and all we can say is we’re happy to be providing the service and helping these great organisations promote their message.

Macmillan Volunteer Conference

Macmillan Cancer Support relies on a network of volunteers to provide support to those with cancer, and once a year the charity holds a Volunteer Conference for networking, volunteer awards, volunteer support and development opportunities. This year’s conference was on the 17th & 18th of May in Blackpool, and Photo Cutouts delivered some traditional face in the hole boards for a bit of extra fun for the delegates.

The boards obviously did their job!

Healthcare conference photo cutout boards

NHS Wales

This is a general purpose board for NHS Wales that they are going to use at a variety of events and locations. It’s a folding board, which means it can be carried about easily and even transported in a small car to wherever it is needed. Perfect for a mobile awareness message!

NHS Wales healthcare board

Cancer Research

Cancer research are doing a roadshow in Scotland, and one of the props they’ll be using is a pair boards that let the public step into the shoes of a cancer-busting super scientist. Lord knows we need these people, so promoting their efforts is one thing we have absolutely no problem helping with.

Photo cutout boards for healthcare charitiesWe’ll blog about it again next time there is a series of orders for boards from a particular sector or industry or cause. For now, whether you are a healthcare organisation or something completely different, if you have an event coming up and would like something extra to drive engagement and promote your message, get in touch with Photo Cutouts on:

Selfie boards: for when less is more

Let’s go walkabout with selfie boards!

As always at Photo Cutouts, we’ve been listening to our customers and coming up with creative solutions that suit their events. For three of our recent customers – AmEx, Vaillant and NowPressPlay, a large static face in the hole board wasn’t quite what they needed due to their events’ formats and the other promotional materials they were using. What they asked for was a smaller board that people can hold and pose for photos with as they walk around the event, and can easily be passed from one person to another. This led to Selfie Boards, which are proving popular with other event organiser customers as well.

With no feet required to keep them standing upright, selfie boards are very light while giving a similar impression to a full-size board in photos. 100cm x 80cm is the standard size for a selfie board and this can be portrait (usually 1 face hole) or landscape (there can be 2 face holes). To help maintain the face-in-the-hole illusion, we put a pair of handles on the back so that the board can be held without the holder’s hands showing at the sides (otherwise it looks like the cover of Vanity Fair or similar Photoshop disaster.) Despite all our care and attention, though, what people actually do with our boards is beyond our control, as you can see here: 😉

Promotional selfie boards
Well, we tried

But as long as selfie boards help to get the brand message across and people have fun with them, that’s the main thing. Just don’t show the photos to our designer, Jim. He’d have kittens.

Here’s a selfie board we made for American Express to promote their Global Business Traveller programme. The 100 x 80cm format makes it easy to hold up and pass around.

Selfie board for event marketing

And finally, we’ve heard of bunny boilers, but this is a boiler bunny! Vaillant, the boiler company, have a bunny mascot called Johann, and here he is not quite filling the human-sized face hole on the board we made for them. As we said, what people (and bunnies) do with our boards is beyond our control!

Here’s how to get people into your product

Product marketing
Photo Cutouts: getting people into your brand

If you have a product to launch or promote, then naturally you want people to ‘get into’ your product. But what does ‘get into’ mean, exactly? Understand its purpose? Appreciate its unique selling points? Become convinced that it’s the best on the market? Be overjoyed about how it solves a problem for them? Recommend it to others? Become loyal users of it?

Well, all of these, of course. But what we meant is quite simply to encourage people to, well, physically get into your product by putting their faces in a board with your product on it! The concept couldn’t be simpler, and you know what? It works. That is why photocutouts.co.uk has gone from an obscure maker of seaside Punch-and-Judy boards to Britain’s leading producer of face-in-hole marketing props, serving brands both big and small. Here are a few of the big brands who have used our boards for marketing:

  • The BBC
  • Unilever
  • Huawei
  • Autoglass
  • The Royal Air Force
  • Seabrook Crisps
  • The National Trust
  • Capital FM
  • World Animal Protection
  • American Express
  • Cancer Research
  • Anglian Water
  • King’s College London
  • Cussons Carex

Product boards from photocutouts.co.uk are the perfect marketing accessory at trade shows, conferences and exhibitions. One example this week is Wavegrip, a company who make hygienic, recyclable packaging for cans. They went all the way to Nashville, Tennessee to promote their products to the Craft Brewers’ Conference, and prepared well in advance by asking us to make them a promotional face in the hole board to take along with them. Here they are sharing board photos on social media.

product marketing tools

They were able to take the board along with them because it folds in two and is easy to carry and set up. Imagine taking the board in the photo on a plane – what a kerfuffle that would be! Well, we thought of that, so our conference boards have the option of coming as a folding two-piece that you can carry under your arm. Wavegrip are going to use their folding board at their next event as well (an expo in Germany), and the next one after that. For a small outlay they now have an excellent marketing tool that screams about their products and that people have fun interacting with and taking photos of (which they are likely to then share on social media, further promoting the brand).

We also make promotional cutouts without face holes to dot around exhibition spaces and use on stands – we can make any shape, size and design required and put whatever branding or message you ask for on them. A fun way of promoting your brand!

Recent face in the hole boards March /April

Business at Photo Cutouts is never quiet, but it’s picking up quite a bit now for the Spring/Summer marketing and events season. We’re making bold, colourful custom event boards for more and more brands and causes every year, and the upward trend is continuing as we swing into the (fingers crossed) warmer months of 2018. In addition to our classic range of off-the-peg traditional wedding and seaside boards which are always popular, we really enjoy making bespoke boards for marketing events, product launches, TV and radio stations (BBC and ITV among them), weddings and fundraising events.

Here are a few of the ones we’ve made is March and April, though this is the tip of the iceberg because there are so many others we can’t tell you about because the events haven’t happened yet! Suffice it to say that Summer 2018 will be another bumper face in the hole board-filled year as brands and causes across Britain use our unique boards to promote their messages.

ITV Weather

ITV Weather rang us in early April to order 6 or our space-saving folding boards for a series of mobile events inviting members of the public to be weather presenter for a day. These boards can be folded in half for easy transport and storage, which made them ideal for ‘roadshow’-type campaigns like this. Rather than design them ourselves, in this case we used a design provided by ITV.

Green Flag Wales

Green Flag Wales do a great job campaigning to keep Wales tidy. We are delighted to help them in their efforts to raise awareness of environmental concerns with boards like this:

green flag wales april boards

And we also made a Summer-themed board for Keep Wales Tidy which we designed ourselves with a few humorous touches:

Global 4 Communications

Global 4 Communications are celebrating 20 years in the business telephone systems market. This board for their celebration party is pretty straightforward: be king for a day!

Fuller’s London Pride

This one was for the 2018 London Marathon, the hottest on record. No doubt more than a few pints of London Pride were quaffed after the race, especially with this board to remind them to imbibe!

London Pride April 2018

This is a one-hole board with the left and right faces already printed. A good photo opportunity at the London Marathon!

Don’t laugh! Right now we might be scraping ice off our cars every morning, but the weather will be warmer before we know it, and the Summer events season will be upon us. Our first Photo Cutouts were born from the traditional idea of the Summer seaside face in the hole board, and they are still timeless classics. We started out with cheeky traditional boards like ‘Fat Lady on the Beach’ and ‘Skinny Jimmy the Lifeguard’. Now we’ve got a lot of varied designs that come at the classic theme from different angles. Here are a few of them. They might give you an idea for a design of your own (you can have logos, branding etc. on your board to promote your brand, cause, or event!)

Folding boards make transport & storage a breeze!

New folding design takes up half the space

Photo Cutouts’ product innovation is driven by our customers. So when a customer said that one of our standard boards wouldn’t fit into her small car to drive it to her exhibition venue, we had a bit of a brainwave.

We could have supplied the board in two pieces and let our customer put it together. But we thought we’d go one better. We gave our customer a board that simply folds in two for easy transport and storage.

Folding photo cutout boards, folding marketing props, compact marketing props
Here’s our design wizard Jim with a folding board (Well most of him – he’s a bit shy)

Feedback from the customer was positive: the folded board was easy to carry, set up, take down and store for the next event, taking up half the space a regular board would when folded. As a result, we’ve added folding boards to our range of options. Here’s the new website page about this convenient new option.

Folding marketing props, compact marketing props UK
A folding board erected in a couple of minutes

Because of the extra work involved, folding boards do cost a bit more than regular ones. But if easy transport and storage is a must for you, it’s an option worth considering.

The legs and feet attach to the board with bolts that are easy to affix with a 10mm spanner (supplied with the board). They are lightweight aluminium and sturdy enough to keep the board upright in moderate winds. With the legs attached a folding board is just as rigid as a one-piece board.

Why not compliment a folding or one-piece custom board with some bespoke branding props to position strategically at your event? They are made of the same lightweight, weatherproof PVC as the face in the hole boards and can be contoured to any size and shape.
