Seaside themed cutouts create a nostalgic photo opportunity

Seaside face in the hole boards

The seaside is the home of the photo cutout, or peep boards. Since the early 50’s face-in-the-hole boards have been a prominent form of entertainment at our seaside towns. More people than ever are spending their summer holidays in the UK this year for obvious reasons, and with this warm weather, trips to the coast are on the agenda for the 2020 staycation. (Although we advise steering clear of the busy hotspots, don’t want to end up on the 10 o’clock news!). So before the thunderstorms hit, let’s revisit to some of the seaside themed face-in-the-hole boards we have produced for a range of clients.

Seaview Beach Café

Situated directly on the seafront of West Runton beach, Seaview Beach Café wanted to create a memorable photo opportunity for beachgoers. This face-in-the-hole board has a fun design, fully branded with the café logo and hashtag. Easily moveable, the peep board can be positioned outside in low winds or within the café itself.

Professor Shambles

A classic Punch and Judy board for children’s entertainer Professor Shambles. This is one of our stock seaside boards with the customer’s name, tagline and phone number added. Easy to transport, Professor Shambles can assemble the board at each party location. Face holes are positioned at an ideal height for children so party-goers return home with a fun, branded photo to remember the event.

Berties Fish and Chip restaurant

Edinburgh’s “Place To Be” for the best fish and chips, chose to tap into the nostalgia of fish and chips at the seaside. Berties Fish and Chips brought the seaside to Edinburgh with a ‘Thin Tim and Big Bertha’ photo cutout board. The board captures the traditional humour of the peep board and engages with customers and passersby of the restaurant.

Blue Flag England

Keep Britain Tidy commissioned some Blue Flag boards to promote clean beaches and those awarded with a #BestBeaches award. Custom designed seaside themed cutouts are an engaging way to generate awareness of the clean beaches campaign. Here’s one of the Blue Flag boards in action:

Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

Sailing superstar Ellen MacArthur’s charity helps children and young people regain their confidence after cancer. This fun interactive board is used at their live events to promote the charity’s message with its Twitter, Facebook and Instagram handles.

#FFSLDN

For Fish’s Sake London is a campaign by environmental charity Hubbub. The message is clear: don’t drop litter in London where it can end up in the Thames, because it really gives aquatic life there a hard time. These underwater-themed cutout boards have been used down by the river to promote awareness.

Peter James book launch

When bestselling novelist Peter James launched his Roy Grace novel, Need You Dead, in Brighton, his publicist commissioned this cops and robber’s themed photo board. The board was used as a photo opportunity for fans at a book signing as they waited for his autograph.

Being by the seaside, a fun face-in-the-hole board was a fitting tribute to the location and the cops and robbers theme lent itself perfectly to the crime genre of the novel.

Christmas Nutcracker Trail photo boards!

The Christmas Nutcracker Trail – coming to a town near you?

Christas nutcracker photo boards

We have really enjoyed making this group of boards for Odin Events, who are organising a series of Nutcracker Trails to promote Christmas shopping in town centres around the country. Featuring 6.5-foot tall Nutcracker Kings placed strategically around the town, the campaign encourages shoppers and their children to follow the trail and find all the nutcrackers and their names.

We are proud to be supporting this fun programme of festive promotions with specially made photo cutout boards. They present an opportunity to interact with a picture of a nutcracker and take photos to celebrate finding them and completing the trail. Kids and grown-ups alike can’t resist putting their faces in the holes and having their photos taken – and that’s the magic of how photo cutouts promote engagement with locations, brands, campaigns and causes.

Nutcracker dolls are associated with Christmas thanks to German stories like The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann, in which a young girl’s favourite Christmas toy comes alive and defeats the evil Mouse King before he takes her away to a magical land populated by dolls. Tchaikovsky’s Ballet of the same name is based on Alexandre Dumas’s adaptation of Hoffmann’s story.

Nutcracker dolls originated in 17th-century Germany and are traditional Christmas children’s toys there. They became popular outside Germany when World War II soldiers took them back to the United States and the rest of Europe as souvenirs.

For more about the Nutcracker Trail, see below.

Photo Cutouts create gorgeous, colourful face-in-the-hole boards, photo stand-ins and photo walls for events, promotions, branding, marketing and charity fundraising. There’s still time for us to make one for you for the Christmas shopping season!

Beach boards celebrate our coastal culture

This week we’ll take a break from the booming custom made boards side of our business and get back to basics with the boards that started it all: colourful seaside fat lady on the beach-style face in hole boards. Nostalgic and fun, they hark back to the saucy postcards of naughty artist Donald McGill and have become a vintage classic and a cherished part of our coastal heritage.

They are perfect for seaside parties, beach-themed parties, birthdays, seaside weddings and company events (we can brand them if required).

Take your pick from our cheeky, postcard-style, traditional beach designs. Choose from Punch and Judy, Ethel and Ernie, Skinny Jimmy, Betty and Billy, Fat Mabel, Little Johnny, Thin Tim & Big Bertha, Doris and Dick and Strong John to add to your event. Perfect for use at school fêtes, parties and family fun days.

Here she is … the original Fat Lady on the Beach! Isn’t she lovely?

We think traditional British coastal culture is worth preserving, and it’s nice to see it thriving in a few areas, but much more can be done. Here’s a link to a blog post we made last year which talks about the Seaside Heritage Network, an initiative to catalogue and preserve our valuable coastal cultural assets.

Our seaside boards don’t take as long to make as custom boards, because the designs are already done and we can get the boards out to you in just a few days as opposed to two weeks or more for a custom board. That makes them ideal for last-minute party planning – all we need is a week’s notice. Why not add one to your Summer party, beach event, birthday party? It adds so much fun and is bound to produce some memorable photos!

Our Geffrye Museum face in hole board is a bit special

This week’s Board of the Week is one we made for the Geffrye Museum of the Home.

An 1830s drawing room

If you’ve never visited the Geffrye Museum of the Home in London’s Shoreditch, you really should. It explores home and home life in England from 1600 to the present day.  Just the building is wonderful enough. It’s a Grade I-listed 18th -century almshouses that was built in 1714 from a bequest from Sir Robert Geffrye, a former Lord Mayor of London and master of the Ironmongers’ Company. It’s beautiful. Just look at those proportions.

Geffrye Museum, building, beautiful

Inside, displays of middle-class London living rooms and gardens show how tastes, styles, society and behaviour have changed over the centuries. One of the museum’s most popular regular fixtures is the Christmas Past exhibition, with eleven different period rooms decorated authentically for the season. How times change!

Geffrye
A 1695 parlour

The almshouses have been restored to their original condition and give a glimpse into the lives of the poor and the elderly in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

The Geffrye Museum is currently raising funds for its £18m ‘Unlocking the Geffrye’ project, which will open up the Geffrye for all visitors and the local community by developing existing buildings, creating new spaces and preserving the museum for future generations. It aims to provide improved access, new galleries and more collections on display at any one time.

Here’s a face in hole board we’ve made for the Geffrye Museum which they have been using in their fundraising efforts. It is a cartoon depicting a Dandy and a lady with some pretty spectacular headgear.

And here it is in use by the museum on their Twitter account.

Dandy, Geffrye

We’re pleased to have helped yet another fine institution with a photo board for attracting attention!

Dress up as your ancestors – or someone else’s ancestors

ancestors portrait reconstruction

In a fascinating news story recently, it was revealed that an artist from Peru likes to dress up as his ancestors (both male and female) in painstaking photographic reproductions of his old family portraits. It seems he is obsessed with his noble lineage and so proud of it that he goes to great lengths to recreate historic oil portraits of his forebears, with himself playing the central role.

He probably hasn’t heard of face in hole boards. He could have had the portraits printed onto board, cut out the faces, applied some careful makeup and put his face in the hole to mimic his ancestors. But he’s clearly such a perfectionist that he feels it necessary to recreate the whole painting. Fair enough. It takes all sorts.

The National Self Portrait Gallery is based on a similar idea. We haven’t managed to actually track down the descendants of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and the model who sat for the Mona Lisa and get them to pose in reproductions of the famous paintings, but the face in hole format gives anyone the chance to step into historic portraits!

Let’s play spot the difference. Here is Peruvian artist Christian Fuchs posing as his great-great-great-great grandfather next to the original painting:

face in hole portrait

And here’s an event attendee posing as The Laughing Cavalier in one of the panels of the National Self Portrait Gallery, our pop-up face in hole art gallery:

dress up as your ancestors

Can you see the join where his head goes through the hole? No, neither can we! Perfect isn’t it?

The National Self Portrait Gallery consists of several panels of four or five portraits with the faces cut out and a space behind for guests to stand and put their faces through the holes. Hey presto – they become historical figures! Friends and other guests can snap away with their cameras or smartphones and get the results on Instagram, Pinterest or wherever they like.
