Selfie boards: for when less is more

Let’s go walkabout with selfie boards!

As always at Photo Cutouts, we’ve been listening to our customers and coming up with creative solutions that suit their events. For three of our recent customers – AmEx, Vaillant and NowPressPlay, a large static face in the hole board wasn’t quite what they needed due to their events’ formats and the other promotional materials they were using. What they asked for was a smaller board that people can hold and pose for photos with as they walk around the event, and can easily be passed from one person to another. This led to Selfie Boards, which are proving popular with other event organiser customers as well.

With no feet required to keep them standing upright, selfie boards are very light while giving a similar impression to a full-size board in photos. 100cm x 80cm is the standard size for a selfie board and this can be portrait (usually 1 face hole) or landscape (there can be 2 face holes). To help maintain the face-in-the-hole illusion, we put a pair of handles on the back so that the board can be held without the holder’s hands showing at the sides (otherwise it looks like the cover of Vanity Fair or similar Photoshop disaster.) Despite all our care and attention, though, what people actually do with our boards is beyond our control, as you can see here: 😉

Promotional selfie boards
Well, we tried

But as long as selfie boards help to get the brand message across and people have fun with them, that’s the main thing. Just don’t show the photos to our designer, Jim. He’d have kittens.

Here’s a selfie board we made for American Express to promote their Global Business Traveller programme. The 100 x 80cm format makes it easy to hold up and pass around.

And finally, we’ve heard of bunny boilers, but this is a boiler bunny! Vaillant, the boiler company, have a bunny mascot called Johann, and here he is not quite filling the human-sized face hole on the board we made for them. As we said, what people (and bunnies) do with our boards is beyond our control!

Here’s how to get people into your product

Product marketing
Photo Cutouts: getting people into your brand

If you have a product to launch or promote, then naturally you want people to ‘get into’ your product. But what does ‘get into’ mean, exactly? Understand its purpose? Appreciate its unique selling points? Become convinced that it’s the best on the market? Be overjoyed about how it solves a problem for them? Recommend it to others? Become loyal users of it?

Well, all of these, of course. But what we meant is quite simply to encourage people to, well, physically get into your product by putting their faces in a board with your product on it! The concept couldn’t be simpler, and you know what? It works. That is why photocutouts.co.uk has gone from an obscure maker of seaside Punch-and-Judy boards to Britain’s leading producer of face-in-hole marketing props, serving brands both big and small. Here are a few of the big brands who have used our boards for marketing:

  • The BBC
  • Unilever
  • Huawei
  • Autoglass
  • The Royal Air Force
  • Seabrook Crisps
  • The National Trust
  • Capital FM
  • World Animal Protection
  • American Express
  • Cancer Research
  • Anglian Water
  • King’s College London
  • Cussons Carex

Product boards from photocutouts.co.uk are the perfect marketing accessory at trade shows, conferences and exhibitions. One example this week is Wavegrip, a company who make hygienic, recyclable packaging for cans. They went all the way to Nashville, Tennessee to promote their products to the Craft Brewers’ Conference, and prepared well in advance by asking us to make them a promotional face in the hole board to take along with them. Here they are sharing board photos on social media.

product marketing tools

They were able to take the board along with them because it folds in two and is easy to carry and set up. Imagine taking the board in the photo on a plane – what a kerfuffle that would be! Well, we thought of that, so our conference boards have the option of coming as a folding two-piece that you can carry under your arm. Wavegrip are going to use their folding board at their next event as well (an expo in Germany), and the next one after that. For a small outlay they now have an excellent marketing tool that screams about their products and that people have fun interacting with and taking photos of (which they are likely to then share on social media, further promoting the brand).

We also make promotional cutouts without face holes to dot around exhibition spaces and use on stands – we can make any shape, size and design required and put whatever branding or message you ask for on them. A fun way of promoting your brand!

Experiential Marketing with photo cutouts

Are you promoting a business, brand, or cause? Then you might have heard of experiential marketing, also known as event marketing and engagement marketing. The Content Marketing Institute listed it as the number one most effective marketing tactic in a survey, with 72% of marketers saying it was the best.

So what is experiential marketing? Quite simply, it is involving the public in experiences that involve the brand. Rather than just telling them your brand is fantastic, experiential marketing gets them interacting with it themselves and developing a personal bond. Your product or cause becomes a part of their lives.

Event marketing Experiential marketing with photo cutouts standees

Photo cutout boards are a simple but effective example of experiential marketing. Instead of remote, detached hoardings and banners, photo cutout boards are designed to be interacted with. When a couple of people poke their faces through and take a photo, it personalises their relationship with your brand and sticks in their memories. The photo is also a permanent reminder of your brand. And they will quite likely share it on social media so others will see it too.

We have sold hundreds of custom-made photo cutout boards to brands big and small for use at promotional events. One thing they always say is that the boards helped drive more people to their trade stand or increased the number of people stopping for a free sample or to sign up to donate.

Design is very important for a photo cutout board to be effective. Our team of in-house designers will look at your brand and come up with ideas of how to get its central message across in an image with face holes. We work with you until you are happy with the design and make sure the placement of logos, hashtags etc is ideal.

Then we print it in full-colour high resolution onto durable, weatherproof PVC board which is attached to sturdy metal feet.

We’ve also thought about practicalities like transporting the boards to and from your events. We’ve now added a new option to our range – the folding photo cutout board! It is like a regular board except that it folds in half for easy transportation and storage. So there you have it – the ideal, portable experiential marketing prop!

Face in hole king Tomoyuki Shioya, we salute you!

Not all heroes are muscular, brash and tough. Sometimes a hero just quietly gets on with his business, and achieves legendary status through sheer persistence and force of will. Tomoyuki Shioya is one such hero, and he’s our favourite person in the world.

Tomoyuki Shioya, face in the hole boards, photo cutout boards
What a legend.

We blogged about him last May because he has stuck his face in some 3,000 face in hole boards in Japan and elsewhere. He also features in our keystone post Face in Hole Boards: A Bit of History. Everywhere he goes, he takes his camera and tripod with him in case he comes across a face in hole board to add to his photo collection. After finishing his office job at 5pm he wanders the streets in search of something to put his face through. He is on record as stating that he wishes to be buried in a face-in-hole coffin.

Now he has made a video about his strange life and his obsession with face in hole boards, which he considers a high form of art. In Japan, many boards are advertising hoardings that present a photo opportunity to passersby that helps to generate interest in brands. Tomoyuki Shioya has taken the photo opportunity and run with it, and Forrest Gump-like, hasn’t stopped running with it. Maybe one day he’ll hang up his camera and declare enough to be enough, but we guess that as long as there are face in hole boards we will continue to see his face in them.

Watch our hero talk about his passion in his own words.

‘I think they are an extremely effective form of communication,’ says Shioya. ‘The people who make them want to make people happy, and people enjoy taking pictures with them. I think what makes them so great is that everyone involved with them is happy.’

We certainly agree with that. Our photo cutout boards are designed to be fun for all involved, and at the same time they can communicate business messages and promote charities. They add an element of fun and interaction that makes people warm to a brand, or just warm the world with their smiles.

Event marketing with face in hole boards

Photocutouts are proud to have helped get the message out for yet another organisation. This week’s Board of the Week is a marketing board we made for Cohabitas, a company that matches people together for house-sharing.

We think it’s a brilliant idea, because why should people live alone, paying all the bills themselves and with nobody to eat dinner with, when they could be sharing a home with one or more others, living as friends, sharing the bills, and being happier?

face in hole board, marketing, publicity, experiential, content marketing

Here’s the board we made for Cohabitas, to their design specifications. The waiter is meant to be George Clooney. Cohabitas is mainly geared towards women between 45 and 55, who might enjoy having a dishy Hollywood star serving them cupcakes and champagne.

Cohabitas are using the board to promote their business at the WI Fair, Alexandra Palace, London, which runs from the 29th of March to the 1st of April 2017. The WI Fair celebrates everything about the great British institution that is the WI. It brings together four fabulous days of craft, cooking, creativity, shopping, learning and travel. This makes it a perfect showcase for an organisation like Cohabitas.

At shows and exhibitions like this, a face in hole board can be a crowd-puller. It provides a focus, people naturally want to interact with it and take photos, and it bears your organisation’s logo, insignia, phone number, web address, hashtag or anything else you want to put on it to promote your organisation.

When people share their photos with friends and family or on social media, there is your organisation’s logo and other information in the picture. On the internet an image can go far, and if it carries your message, it means a bit more publicity for you every time it is shared.

Crufts season: helping marketing for dogs charity

rehoming dogs, charity, crufts, face in hole board, photo cutout board, fundraising

With Crufts coming up this weekend, the nation’s thoughts are with man’s best friend. The world’s biggest dog show will be on our screens showcasing the finest and best-groomed dogs in the country.

It’s the perfect time to also spare a thought for the dogs who are not in the limelight and who are down on their luck. Charity organisations like the Dogs Trust take homeless dogs in, take care of them and find them new homes.

PhotoCutouts are proud to have worked with the Dogs Trust for the last two years to create promotional materials for the charity. Our photo cutout boards have helped in their fundraising efforts around the country. Here’s a glimpse into how we worked with the lovely folks at the Dogs Trust to create their photo cutout boards.

First our artists did a concept sketch based on ideas from the charity’s marketing manager. From the start we included the organisation’s logo and gave their hashtags a prominent position on the board.

Crufts, dogs, charity, rehoming

This went through a couple more stages with amendments to minor details. Then our designer added colour and made a few more tweaks to produce the final board which the charity approved and accepted.

We printed the design in high resolution onto weatherproof, durable foamex PVC boards, cut out the face holes and added wide, stable feet to stop the boards getting blown over in the wind. These features are standard on all our boards.

We also made some roll-up banners with the same design. These are great for carrying around and unrolling wherever they are needed. They come with lightweight telescopic stands that are easily transportable and can be set up in moments. Here’s a roll-up banner in action.

Standard Fireworks choose Photocutouts for Bonfire Night campaign

In preparation for the 5th of November, Standard Fireworks have commissioned two face in hole boards from photocutouts.co.uk for their Factory Shop in Huddersfield.

Visitors to the factory can put their faces through the holes to be snapped as the Standard Fireworks #BeTheGuy or a passenger on the Standard Fireworks rocket, and get the chance to win some free fireworks! In this blog post we’ll see the boards in use during Bonfire Night preparations and see how they have created a social media campaign around them.

Standard Fireworks are using the hashtag #BeTheGuy for their social media competition. Visitors post photos of themselves or their friends and family with their faces through the boards on Twitter using the hashtag, and they will be picking some lucky winners from those posts at random. Those winners will be invited to the Factory Shop to receive free fireworks to the value of their receipt during their last visit. So if you’re going there, keep your receipts!
