Beach boards celebrate our coastal culture

This week we’ll take a break from the booming custom made boards side of our business and get back to basics with the boards that started it all: colourful seaside fat lady on the beach-style face in hole boards. Nostalgic and fun, they hark back to the saucy postcards of naughty artist Donald McGill and have become a vintage classic and a cherished part of our coastal heritage.

They are perfect for seaside parties, beach-themed parties, birthdays, seaside weddings and company events (we can brand them if required).

Take your pick from our cheeky, postcard-style, traditional beach designs. Choose from Punch and Judy, Ethel and Ernie, Skinny Jimmy, Betty and Billy, Fat Mabel, Little Johnny, Thin Tim & Big Bertha, Doris and Dick and Strong John to add to your event. Perfect for use at school fêtes, parties and family fun days.

Here she is … the original Fat Lady on the Beach! Isn’t she lovely?

We think traditional British coastal culture is worth preserving, and it’s nice to see it thriving in a few areas, but much more can be done. Here’s a link to a blog post we made last year which talks about the Seaside Heritage Network, an initiative to catalogue and preserve our valuable coastal cultural assets.

Our seaside boards don’t take as long to make as custom boards, because the designs are already done and we can get the boards out to you in just a few days as opposed to two weeks or more for a custom board. That makes them ideal for last-minute party planning – all we need is a week’s notice. Why not add one to your Summer party, beach event, birthday party? It adds so much fun and is bound to produce some memorable photos!

Face in hole king Tomoyuki Shioya, we salute you!

Not all heroes are muscular, brash and tough. Sometimes a hero just quietly gets on with his business, and achieves legendary status through sheer persistence and force of will. Tomoyuki Shioya is one such hero, and he’s our favourite person in the world.

Tomoyuki Shioya, face in the hole boards, photo cutout boards
What a legend.

We blogged about him last May because he has stuck his face in some 3,000 face in hole boards in Japan and elsewhere. He also features in our keystone post Face in Hole Boards: A Bit of History. Everywhere he goes, he takes his camera and tripod with him in case he comes across a face in hole board to add to his photo collection. After finishing his office job at 5pm he wanders the streets in search of something to put his face through. He is on record as stating that he wishes to be buried in a face-in-hole coffin.

Now he has made a video about his strange life and his obsession with face in hole boards, which he considers a high form of art. In Japan, many boards are advertising hoardings that present a photo opportunity to passersby that helps to generate interest in brands. Tomoyuki Shioya has taken the photo opportunity and run with it, and Forrest Gump-like, hasn’t stopped running with it. Maybe one day he’ll hang up his camera and declare enough to be enough, but we guess that as long as there are face in hole boards we will continue to see his face in them.

Watch our hero talk about his passion in his own words.

‘I think they are an extremely effective form of communication,’ says Shioya. ‘The people who make them want to make people happy, and people enjoy taking pictures with them. I think what makes them so great is that everyone involved with them is happy.’

We certainly agree with that. Our photo cutout boards are designed to be fun for all involved, and at the same time they can communicate business messages and promote charities. They add an element of fun and interaction that makes people warm to a brand, or just warm the world with their smiles.

Guaranteed fun at any event!

For some reason people find it really funny when someone else sticks their face through a picture. For the origins of the phenomenon, find out more about the history of the photo cutout board. But it doesn’t really matter why it works – it just does. Photo boards add guaranteed fun to all types of events. But which sorts of events are most popular? Here are the main types of event where our photo cutout boards are used:

  • Marketing events / product promotions. A face-in-hole board truly gives a product or service a face, and the interactive nature of the boards mean people play around with them and literally ‘get into’ the brand (which is splashed all over the board). Companies who have used our boards to great effect at marketing and promotional events include Tilda Rice and Autoglass. Here are those two examples:
Custom photo boards, event marketing, branding
Autoglass commissioned a custom design for their promotional event in London.
  • Weddings. Maybe it’s the traditional, saucy nature of photo cutout boards that fits in so well at weddings. Of course the happy couple will pose with their faces in through the holes, but everybody else, young and old, can have a go too. As the wedding party snaps away with their cameras and phones, the board provides a focus and is sure to create wonderful photo memories. See our wedding range here.

  • Seasonal events. Christmas, Easter and Halloween are prime time for parties and events, and we have boards for all three. Customers can hire from our seasonal ranges or have us make a custom board specially for them. Add some interactive Santa, bunny or vampire fun to your seasonal event!

  • Charity fundraising events. We have made custom boards for many charities, who find that they create a healthy buzz at their fundraising events. The board represents the charity and carries the name, web address and social media hashtags if desired, so that when people share their photos of each other grinning or grimacing through the face holes, the charity name, website and social sharing info are plain to see. And people donate more when they are laughing! Here’s a recent one:

New adult themed photo opportunities!

The boards are back in town! We’ve expanded our range with a new adult party-themed product line. Not only that, but our website now has a new look – and the prices stay the same.

As well as the much-loved range of traditional seasonal and seaside photo cutout boards, we’ve given in to our more permissive times with a new range of adult-themed boards. Don’t worry, we don’t mean THAT sort of adult material – we mean fun and hilarious party-animal boards for 18+ parties, club nights, hen and stag parties, and anywhere you want your grown-up crowd to be in a froth of giggles.

So it’s time to reveal … Party Man!

We’re sorry, but you can never un-see this image.

Did that get your attention? That’s the idea: to add an extra element of eye-catching fun to any 18+ party or event and get people peeping through the hole, snapping away, and sharing photos.

Party Man is not alone. He can be hired or purchased with Big Bunny Girl to make a duo board with two face holes:

Party man, borat, mankini, adult party ideas, selfie, photos
Aren’t they a lovely couple? (Don’t answer that)

Party Man’s best buddy is Mervin. He’s had one or two Mars bars too many, but he doesn’t care. He’s here to party, and nobody is getting in his way.

He does not have body image issues, he just wants to party.

Mervin has a female sidekick to complete the pair on this duo board:

From pencil to print: how we make a photo board

A concept sketch

Let us take you on a journey behind the scenes at photocutouts, showing you how the magic happens!

When you call us to order a photo board, the first thing we do is listen to you and gather your requirements. This can be a verbal brief where you give us your idea, or you can supply the artwork yourself. If you have a logo or other branding you would like added to the board, we’ll include it if you can supply us with the image files.

If you have a board design already made by an in-house designer, we’re happy to use that artwork, and will do our best to make it fit best on the size of board you need. We just need the design in high resolution JPEG, EPS or PDF format.

The finished board ready for use

A verbal brief might be something like ‘I’m thinking of a dolphin and a walrus reclining on sun loungers.’ We’ve had odder ones than that – the sky’s the limit when it comes to creative ideas for photo boards. We’ll then discuss the design with you and offer further ideas if we think it will improve the finished product. When we have a detailed brief, we’ll get our in-house team of talented artists to produce a mock-up for you. If you have any amendments to make at that stage, we’ll tweak things until you are satisfied with the design.

We’ll also discuss how the board is going to be used, which includes the age of your audience and any other factors to be considered in its use in practice. For children, you’re going to need the face holes at the right height, and for basketball players, they will need to be a bit higher! We try to make our boards comfortable to use, so that nobody has to crouch down, stand on tiptoes or twist their neck around to use them.

… and the finished product with company branding.

When you are completely happy with the final design, we print it onto high definition, wipe-clean vinyl and apply it to durable, waterproof Foamex™ board. Once the board is made, it needs to stand up, and we are proud of our lightweight aluminium frames that hold the board rigid. We have several support systems for the board and frame, including metal feet and tough, paintable wooden stands that can also have your logo or other artwork on them to expand the board beyond its borders.

We’ll ship the finished board(s) to you by next-day courier, or deliver to you directly if you’re not too far away from our Norfolk workshop.

The complete process from order to finished board can take 3 weeks, so get your order in well in advance of the event you plan to use it for! Call us today on 0845 057 0321.

Peep boards, photo boards … what to call them?

The boards are back in town! Photo cutouts, or face-in-the-hole boards, are back in fashion and creating a marketing storm for our clients such as Autoglass, Chepstow Racecourse, The Sun and others. But we have a problem: what exactly should they be called?

Just look at all the different names we have come across for boards that you poke your face through to have your photo taken. Click on the camera image to make it bigger.

peep board, face-in-the-hole board, character board, photo op board, standee board
People just can’t decide what to call them!

Peep boards, photo cutout boards (of course), Aunt Sally boards, peep through boards, character boards, photo boards, standee boards, face-in-the-hole boards, fat lady on the beach boards … how come there are so many different names for the same thing?

Some people call them Aunt Sally boards because of the traditional English pub and fairground game of throwing sticks and other items at a model bust of ‘Aunt Sally’, a generic character used for venting spleen upon. Why everybody hated her isn’t clear. Fortunately this tradition has largely died out, though versions are still played in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. The most famous use in mainstream television was Una Stubb’s Aunt Sally character in Worzel Gummidge.

Peep boards? Famed diarist Samuel Pepys wrote of one of these boards after happening upon one at a fairground. They then became known as ‘Pepys’ boards’.

All right, we made that one up.

Standee or character boards are actually not quite the ones you put your face through, but we have seen them referred to by this name. Standee/character boards are what are commonly known as ‘cardboard cutouts’ or ‘lifesize cutouts’, like the one Justin Beiber made his fans pay $2,000 to ‘meet’ backstage. They are used to promote films, but do not usually have a hole. People generally stand next to them to have their photo taken.

Face-in-the-hole boards? Theories abound as to the origin of this name, but we feel it’s likely to be connected to the fact that you put your face in the hole.

Fat lady on the beach boards? Well of course that one comes from the art of Donald McGill, whose name is synonymous with the saucy seaside postcards we all know and love, like this one that got McGill into a bit of trouble with the law in 1954 when he was 80.
