Garden centre chain puts Snow Globe boards to good use

Snow Globe boards add Christmas cheer

This week’s blog post is about how a business used Photo Cutouts boards to promote its stores and gave customers a fun experience at the same time. It’s the story of how a garden centre chain boosted its public image with a co-ordinated set of our Snow Globe boards distributed across 22 of its branches. It’s also the story of how you can do the same to promote your business.

This is the Snow Globe board before being customised with the customer’s message.

Klondyke & Strikes Garden Centres like our Snow Globe board so much they ordered 22 of them – one for each of their branches in England, Scotland and Wales. For use during the festive period, the boards are placed strategically at each branch to encourage visitors to pose in them and take photos. The sharing hashtag for Instagram, Twitter and Facebook is #KlondykeSnowglobe.

To tempt customers to share their photos on social media, Klondyke & Strikes are running a ‘Show us your best festive face’ competition with a prize for the best snow globe photo. Customer have really gone for it – just look at the Instagram page for the hashtag #KlondykeSnowglobe and you’ll see how well the campaign is going!

Snow Globe scene
Some of the Snow Globe layouts are absolutely gorgeous.

We really love what Klondyke & Strikes have done with the snow globe boards. Face in hole boards have a vintage feel, and these scenes are examples of real old fashioned window dressing which has always been a vital part of retail but which so many other stores forget to do well. We wish them every success with their seasonal campaign and hope that these beautiful displays make customers feel like spending more! It just gives a nice warm fuzzy feeling for customers that their staff have gone to all that effort, doesn’t it?

Theme of the week: veg!

An entirely meat free blog post

autumn veg
Some suitably seasonal veg yesterday.

Leaves are plummeting off trees, the thermometer is shrinking back into single figures and crisp misty mornings are becoming the norm. Autumn is defined by its plump vegetables: pumpkins, onions, parsnips, mushrooms and other tasty things you just want to roast and whizz up into a thick, warming soup for the chilly months ahead.

This week we’d like to show you a couple of boards we’ve made recently which are for different purposes and niches but which share a theme: crunchy, healthy vegetables! One board is for an awareness-raising campaign encouraging people to go veggie, and the other is for an organic food company who specialise in veg.

The Vegetarian Society

You are what you eat, so this board invites people to ‘become’ vegetables! It was used by VegSoc at a major food fair. Needless to say, the board drew a lot of people to the VegSoc booth, because people just can’t resist having their photo taken as a carrot or a leek!

As always, a face-in-hole board is one of the simplest and most effective ways of conducting awareness campaigns. Here are five other public awareness campaigns that have used Photo Cutouts boards at events.

Tideford Organics

This company make scrummy organic vegan soups, sauces, pestos and misos in their kitchens in Devon and sell them around the UK. They are also an awareness campaign really – just look at their board! It shows how a plant-based diet cuts your carbon footprint and saves water, which helps Tideford Organics to sell more of their tasty and environmentally friendly products. It’s a win-win for this company, and their board was a winner too!

Veg promotional board
This is an example of our new folding board, which as the name suggests folds in two for easy transport and storage. Perfect for taking to exhibitions and fairs!

It’s nearly the weekend, so if you’ll excuse us we’re going to veg out now!

Photo boards: the finishing touch for festivals

Festivals draw in crowds with photo boards

Here are a few of the festivals that have used our photo boards this year. From the large to the small, festivals are events that require branding and exposure. A great way to get people to participate in marketing and popularising a festival is to have one or more photo cutout boards made. They can be placed strategically around the event itself or used in public places before the event to drum up interest. They project a professional image of the event and can carry its main strapline as well as all relevant branding information, such as logos, images, hashtags, web addresses, emails and phone numbers. And here’s the good bit. People love to interact with photo boards, put their faces in the holes and snap funny photos which – guess what? – get shared on social media, bearing the festival’s image and message. The internet does the rest.

Here are some on the boards we’ve done this year for this type of event.

1. Wannabee, the Spice Girls Show at Frimley Lodge Live

Frimley Lodge Live is an annual music festival in Surrey Heath. We made this board for Spice Girls tribute act Wannabee.

2. Oktoberfest

Beery Teutonic oompah-and-lederhosen event Oktoberfest is growing in popularity here in the UK. It’s easy to see why. What’s not to like about sausages, sauerkraut and endless gallons of beer? This board from our Seasonal Range is off-the-peg for Oktoberfest and was used at several events last year. We can add branding for specific beer festivals by request. And the great thing is, it’s beer-proof! The Foamex PVC board doesn’t absorb liquids and can be wiped dry.

3. Bury St Edmunds and Halifax Food & Drink Festivals

Hear ye, hear ye! Local food, drink and business festivals can really benefit from photo boards. People see them around town and they help to raise awareness of the event. It’s simple really. Add the interactivity and fun of them being face-in-hole boards, and they can quickly build up public interest in a local festival. Probably cheaper than employing a town crier too.

4. Chinese New Year

The seasonal Chinese New Year festival is well known throughout the UK. The event can be used for marketing, which electronics giant Huawei have done with this board.

5. Camp Bestival

Family festival and camping experience Camp Bestival is loads of fun for kids and their adults. They used this board well in advance of the event as well as at the event itself.

We’ve got lots more boards for festivals in the pipeline, but we can ‘t tell you about them yet because the events are still to happen!

Experiential Marketing with photo cutouts

Are you promoting a business, brand, or cause? Then you might have heard of experiential marketing, also known as event marketing and engagement marketing. The Content Marketing Institute listed it as the number one most effective marketing tactic in a survey, with 72% of marketers saying it was the best.

So what is experiential marketing? Quite simply, it is involving the public in experiences that involve the brand. Rather than just telling them your brand is fantastic, experiential marketing gets them interacting with it themselves and developing a personal bond. Your product or cause becomes a part of their lives.

Event marketing Experiential marketing with photo cutouts standees

Photo cutout boards are a simple but effective example of experiential marketing. Instead of remote, detached hoardings and banners, photo cutout boards are designed to be interacted with. When a couple of people poke their faces through and take a photo, it personalises their relationship with your brand and sticks in their memories. The photo is also a permanent reminder of your brand. And they will quite likely share it on social media so others will see it too.

We have sold hundreds of custom-made photo cutout boards to brands big and small for use at promotional events. One thing they always say is that the boards helped drive more people to their trade stand or increased the number of people stopping for a free sample or to sign up to donate.

event marketing photo cutouts eventprofs experiential

Design is very important for a photo cutout board to be effective. Our team of in-house designers will look at your brand and come up with ideas of how to get its central message across in an image with face holes. We work with you until you are happy with the design and make sure the placement of logos, hashtags etc is ideal.

Then we print it in full-colour high resolution onto durable, weatherproof PVC board which is attached to sturdy metal feet.

We’ve also thought about practicalities like transporting the boards to and from your events. We’ve now added a new option to our range – the folding photo cutout board! It is like a regular board except that it folds in half for easy transportation and storage. So there you have it – the ideal, portable experiential marketing prop!

Photo cutouts at large right now

Central tweeting: Vaillant

A certain bunny enjoyed one of our Photo Cutouts boards at this week’s launch of boiler company Vaillant’s new magazine for installers. Johann the Bunny is named after the company’s founder Johann Vaillant, who invented the closed-system gas-fired geyser in 1894. Here is the rabbit version of Johann fooling around in the special hand-held face in hole board we made for Vaillant’s magazine launch. We don’t blame him. When there’s a face in hole board to play with, what’s a bunny to do?

And of course a lot of people used it too.

Another hand-held board, coincidentally (our boards are usually free-standing and 6 to 7 feet high, though we can make any size required, including folding boards). This one is for NowPressPlay, an educational technology startup who wanted the board for the Bett (British Educational Training and Technology) Showat Excel in London.

now>press>play is an immersive audio resource that engages primary school children in the curriculum through emotion, imagination and movement.

They are getting maximum mileage out of their Photo Cutouts board by including it in a blog post, sharing it on Twitter and Facebook, and holding a social media contest for the best photo with the board using the hashtag #pinkheadphones. The prize? A free month of their product. Smart marketing!

Nuts Over The Atlantic: update

Charity fundraising face in hole boards photo cutouts

The brave lads from Nuts Over The Atlantic  describe themselves as ‘4 distinctly average guys rowing across the Atlantic for #Movember’. But their achievement is anything but average. At the time of writing they have been rowing for 44 days and are under 800 miles from their goal on the American side of the big pond. Their autotiller broke but they have fixed it, they have of course grown beards and have been lashed by storms and huge waves. But they’re still on target!

Nuts over the Atlantic photo cutout

Before they set off on their odyssey we made a Photo Cutouts board to promote their campaign. Nearly there lads!

So that’s just a sprinkling of the boards out there being used to promote campaigns, product launches and brands at trade shows. We can only really blog about the ones that who have posted photos – not everybody does, which is fair enough.

Marketing a business in 2018 with Photo Cutouts

Check out our new video!

Get people into your brand – literally!

Frank’s Hot Sauce turning up the heat on their brand marketing with one of our boards

The thing business owners and marketers crave more than any other is engagement. This means people interacting with the brand in some way, seeing it as a friendly presence in their lives, and talking about it. Engagement can happen on social media, on internet forums, in real life, on the phone, in blogs, and any place where people interact. This generates brand familiarity and leads to more sales.

Photo cutout boards are effective for marketing a business because they create a focus point for people to interact with the brand in the real world. We’ve all seen them around: a logo, a tagline and a mascot (think Tony The Tiger for Frosties) with the face cut out for people to put their faces through.

Viasat launched their Epic Drama Channel with a period face in the hole board

This is a great way for people to literally get into a brand. A photo cutout board is bold, bright and colourful and puts your brand right in front of people and invites them to play with it. It’s a photo opportunity many people can’t resist, and when they share their photos, guess what – there’s your brand in the photo!

The Jelly Lounge use our boards to increase interaction with their brand

Photo cutout boards serve as portable advertising hoardings that passers-by will see, even if they choose not to interact with them. So the brand has been publicised right there. Unlike simple hoardings, though, photo cutout boards are down at ground level and invite people to put their faces through the holes and take photos. It’s that extra dimension that makes photo cutout boards so effective in marketing a business.

They work brilliantly at trade shows, exhibitions, product promotions, external and internal marketing drives, and other events.

2017: a look back at the year

photo cutout boards 2017

2017 was a great year for face in hole boards!

In 2017 our photo cutout board sales have more than tripled as businesses, charities, wedding planners and corporate event planners have embraced the fun factor and engagement value that’s built into every one of our boards. We’ve made some important quality and safety improvements, added new boards to our standard and seasonal ranges, and improved our logistics to get the boards out to customers’ venues ever more quickly and efficiently.

We can honestly say that we’re here to stay, as we have carved out our niche in the event planning space and watched our boards grow in popularity more than we’d ever thought possible. So a huge thank you to all our customers – it’s been an outstanding 2017!

This was a great example of a brand running a promotion using a photo cutouts board. With special competition packaging for their hand soap, combined with social media hashtags promoted on our boards and a promotional partnership with Alton Towers, Cussons did it right.

Water saving with photo cutout boards!

Board of the week: Affinity Water

Affinity Water photo cutout for marketing and public engagement

We have been working with green campaigners Hubbub for quite a while now and have produced 7 different board designs for them, including the #FFSLdn (For Fish’s Sake, London) campaign to stop littering in the Thames and help fish get on with their lives without having to deal with so much dangerous plastic and other waste that people tip down the drains and thence into the river.

This week they asked us for a board to raise awareness of water wastage for water supplier Affinity Water. Pretty cool isn’t it?

As you can see in the picture above, taken from Twitter, photo boards form a good basis for social media awareness campaigns because they are so visual and people participate readily by putting their faces in the board and snapping and sharing photos. We are happy to be helping Hubbub again in raising awareness of environmental issues.

We also make boards for a number of UK charities, including Sense, Dogs Trust, RSPCA, World Animal Protection, Poppy Scotland and the Penny Appeal.

It’s on every fundraiser’s wish list to get as much engagement with the public as possible, and custom-designed face in the hole boards are just the ticket. We add the organisation’s logo, images, hashtags, URLs, phone numbers and any other insignia they request to help their campaigns.

When people take photos and share them on social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook, the campaign’s logo and message is carried around the web, further increasing awareness and engagement.

This particular board is part of Affinity Water’s campaign to inform people about how they might be wasting water because of a leaky loo, a wasteful flush, and things like leaving the tap running while brushing their teeth. We all do something to waste water, don’t we?

Photo Cutouts are proud to be supporting this campaign and getting its message out in public and on the web.

Christmas Nutcracker Trail photo boards!

The Christmas Nutcracker Trail – coming to a town near you?

Christas nutcracker photo boards

We have really enjoyed making this group of boards for Odin Events, who are organising a series of Nutcracker Trails to promote Christmas shopping in town centres around the country. Featuring 6.5-foot tall Nutcracker Kings placed strategically around the town, the campaign encourages shoppers and their children to follow the trail and find all the nutcrackers and their names.

We are proud to be supporting this fun programme of festive promotions with specially made photo cutout boards. They present an opportunity to interact with a picture of a nutcracker and take photos to celebrate finding them and completing the trail. Kids and grown-ups alike can’t resist putting their faces in the holes and having their photos taken – and that’s the magic of how photo cutouts promote engagement with locations, brands, campaigns and causes.

Christmas nutcracker doll

Nutcracker dolls are associated with Christmas thanks to German stories like The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann, in which a young girl’s favourite Christmas toy comes alive and defeats the evil Mouse King before he takes her away to a magical land populated by dolls. Tchaikovsky’s Ballet of the same name is based on Alexandre Dumas’s adaptation of Hoffmann’s story.

Nutcracker dolls originated in 17th-century Germany and are traditional Christmas children’s toys there. They became popular outside Germany when World War II soldiers took them back to the United States and the rest of Europe as souvenirs.

Get your face in the ho-ho-hole!

This one is really popular …

Photo cutout boards are a proven way to increase public engagement at Christmas events. They create a focus for people to take photos and a branded board helps to promote your event and create a buzz.

Snowglobe christmas face in the ho-ho-hole board

This new snow globe design for 2017 is proving popular. Brands who have bought it include the Brecon Mountain Railway for their Santa Specials, the Elveden Estate for use in their Christmas-themed shops and courtyard, and Orchard Events for use at the Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. It’s a nice cosy design that makes people feel good, warm and Christmassy, and our customers are loving it.

Like all our Christmas boards, the Snow Globe can be personalised and branded with logos, messages, hashtags and other insignia on its large ‘brass plaque’ at the bottom. When the public put their faces in the ho-ho-hole, their shared photos carry the brand’s message far and wide on the web via photo sharing sites and social media. So as well as creating a fun atmosphere at the event itself, it publicises your brand on the interwebs!

Photo boards get people into your brand – literally!

National Trust Christmas photo cutout boards - get your face in the ho-ho-hole!
Any brand can use a photo cutout board to increase engagement – including the National Trust!

Any organisation can boost its PR with a custom-made photo cutout board. Above is a photo of a pair of Christmas boards we made for the National Trust last year. These were for their Hardwick Hall location, and they worked so well that since then they have come back to us and we have made boards for other Trust locations as well.

There are lots of new custom boards that we can’t tell you about because they have not yet been used in public – we don’t like to jump the gun on our customers, so we keep original custom designs under wraps until they are at large and people are engaging with the bran by putting their faces in the ho-ho-hole and sharing photos.

What design can we make for your brand? Ask us on 08450 570321 or email office@connectedshopping.com .
